Phentermine

Phentermine is used along with a doctor-approved, reduced-calorie diet, exercise, and behavior change program to help you lose weight. It is used in people who are significantly overweight (obese) and have not been able to lose enough weight with diet and exercise alone. This medication is an appetite suppressant and belongs to a class of drugs called sympathomimetic amines. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., blood pressure, heart tests, kidney tests, etc) may be performed periodically to monitor your progress, or check for side effects.

Phentermine works on the hypothalamus portion of the brain to stimulate the adrenal glands to release norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter or chemical messenger that signals a fight-or-flight response, reducing hunger. Phentermine works outside the brain, as well, to release epinephrine or adrenaline, causing fat cells to break down stored fat.

Side effects: Dizziness, dry mouth, difficulty sleeping, irritability, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation.
